From the introduction
If you care about people and the world, this book is for you.
To the compassionate health professional struggling in a system that fails your patients and leaves you exhausted, I offer new hope and healing.
To the leader passionate about building a better world, I share insights and lessons that transformed my leadership, healed my hospital, and brought me new hope. I’ll also explain why my decades of effort to change the system failed.
While my story unfolds in the healthcare sector, the problems we collectively face – and their solutions – are universal. We are all influenced by two powerful forces: the pervasive myths and beliefs that shape our thinking, and the impact of trauma on all of our lives.
Unlike my previous books, this one isn’t about persuasion. I offer few facts or arguments, no directives and no calls to action. Instead, I share my story – the experiences, reflections and adventures that ultimately led me to answers.
This book is about a broken medical system – a system in crisis that desperately needs healing. It is a story about childhood trauma and the stand it compelled me to take. It is an illustration of the blind spots that prevent us from seeing the extraordinary potential of the living world, instead keeping us trapped in machine-world thinking. Above all, it’s about the opportunity we now have to heal ourselves, each other and the world.
I am a medical specialist with over thirty years of hospital practice who became a trauma therapist and healer. The horrors and miracles I’ve witnessed have profoundly shaped my views on health and healing.
As a health leader and former engineer, I spent a lifetime fighting to make health systems safer, more effective and more humane, but most of my efforts were in vain. Why?
To answer that, we must start with what drove me to challenge a broken system in the first place. How did my childhood and early experiences as a doctor shape the leader I became? How does trauma affect all of us and how can it be healed?
And what is the root cause of the escalating crisis in healthcare, housing, education, justice, food production, and nearly every other aspect of modern society? Why aren’t we taking effective action against the climate emergency and the collapse of natural ecosystems?
These questions have haunted me for a lifetime, and the ultimate solution came as a complete surprise: we must rediscover what it means to be human and the science of healing.
With this knowledge, we can see how societal myths and beliefs limit our possibilities and begin to imagine a better, alternative future.
This book chronicles my journey from despair to hope, offering a radically new understanding of healing. But before we reach that destination, we must confront what is broken.
Hold on tight; it’s going to be an action-packed ride!
